I have four quick credit health tips to share that will help you maintain good credit.

Here are four tips to be aware of if you want to improve your credit health:

1. When you get your credit pulled by a mortgage company, they’re not allowed to give you a copy of that report. The only agencies allowed to give you a copy of your report are TransUnion, Equifax, and Experian. However, your mortgage company can tell you your credit score (in fact, they’re required to). Our first credit health tip, then, is to get your own copy of your credit report directly from the credit bureaus before you start the mortgage process.

2. You can dispute something on your credit report you don’t agree with. This is free and easy to do, but there are a couple of things to remember. First, your creditor has to respond to your dispute within 30 days. Second, you must get your dispute resolved and removed from your credit because you can’t get a mortgage with an open dispute.

3. You can freeze your credit for free. If you’re worried about identity theft, for example, this will prevent anyone from pulling your credit. If you’d like to know how to do this, reach out to me and I’d be glad to instruct you.

4. Credit report agencies sell your data—a lot. Our last credit health tip is focused on making your mailbox  less annoying. Have you ever gotten pre-approved offers in the mail for your credit card(s) or a new warranty on your vehicle? That’s where your data goes. The good news is, you can opt-out of this for free. All you have to do is call 1-888-5-OPTOUT and you’ll be opted out of all three credit agencies. Afterward, your junk mail will decrease significantly.

If you’d like more credit tips or you have any lending questions I can answer, don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’d be happy to help you.
